Stuart Street Atelier began as the art studio for the contemporary realist painter and sculptor, Jennifer E. Sims. As her friends and fellow artists joined her to paint at the studio, it became a venue for contemporary artists, realists and impressionists. Now the atelier is home to two additional nationally recognized representational artists: Sue Braswell and Patricia Rice. (For more information about our resident artists, please visit their individual pages by clicking on the main menu).
Nestled in the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Stuart Street Atelier is proud to offer classes and workshops by its resident artists as well as other award-winning artists such as Michael T. Davis, David Shevlino, Kathleen Friedenberg, Joseph Noorigian, Lina Liberace, Hollis Dunlap, Booth Malone, Steven Parrish, Susan Gallagher ONeill and others. The Atelier, including Artists’ studios and office, is located in the first floor of the historic train station at 6364 Stuart Street in The Plains, VA. The three large studios are bright and airy and served by a large lot for free parking. The studios are furnished with shadow boxes, easels, model stands, sculpture stands, taborets, blackout curtains and professional lighting. A six bed Guest apartment on the second floor of the Atelier is available for artists or instructors participating in workshops and classes. Known as “The Whistlestop”, it is separately managed by an historic trust, is beautifully furnished and includes a kitchenette and laundry. Destination restaurants as well as a tea shop, coffee shop and deli are all within easy walking distance and parking is both plentiful and free.
Each resident artist maintains her studio and Gallery of works on site, which may be viewed by clicking on the menu tab. These works are for sale and commissions are welcome.
